Ear Lobe Repair — Restoring Shape, Confidence & the Joy of Earrings

Dr. Harikiran Chekuri, a skilled Plastic Surgeon in Hyderabad, performed a precise, minimally invasive ear lobe repair for a patient with a traumatic tear caused by earring traction. Using a surgical correction technique under local anaesthesia, the procedure restored the natural shape of the earlobe, allowing the patient to confidently wear earrings again with no reported complications.

PATIENT PROFILE

Age 60 years
Gender Female
Occupation Homemaker
City Hyderabad
Presenting Complaint Split ear lobe on the left side — gradually worsened over time due to earring weight
Diagnosis Split Ear Lobe (Left Side) — Clinical
Duration of Issue Gradual progression over several years from regular earring use
Previous Treatments None — first surgical consultation
Date of Procedure January 2026
Outcome Good — Natural shape restored

THE PROBLEM

Aruna presented with a split ear lobe on her left side — a clean, complete tear running through the lower portion of the earlobe where the piercing hole had progressively enlarged and finally torn through. This is one of the most common ear-related complaints seen at aesthetic clinics, usually caused by years of wearing heavy earrings that slowly stretch the piercing until it gives way entirely.

The split was full-thickness, meaning it had torn all the way through the edge of the lobe. The tissue on either side of the tear was thickened and slightly irregular — a typical finding when a split has been present for some time without correction.

For Aruna, this wasn’t just a cosmetic concern. At 60, earrings had always been part of how she dressed and presented herself — a small but meaningful part of her identity. Once the split occurred, she stopped wearing earrings altogether. She felt self-conscious about how her ear looked and was hesitant to wear her hair up in public.

CONSULTATION & TREATMENT PLAN

WHAT DR. HARIKIRAN CHEKURI ASSESSED

  • Location and extent of the split — full-thickness tear through the left earlobe
  • Condition of the surrounding skin tissue — thickness, elasticity, and scar tissue formation
  • Patient’s overall health and fitness for local anesthesia
  • Patient’s goal — to restore natural earlobe shape and be able to wear earrings again
  • Timeline for re-piercing after healing (discussed and planned post-recovery)

PRE-OPERATIVE

The image below documents the clinical presentation at the time of consultation — a complete split of the left earlobe, with both sides of the tear clearly visible. The surrounding tissue shows mild thickening consistent with a chronic, untreated split.

PROCEDURE DETAILS

STEP-BY-STEP OVERVIEW

  • Local anesthesia administered to the left earlobe — patient comfortable throughout
  • Edges of the split freshened by excising a thin strip of epithelialized skin from both sides of the tear
  • Raw wound edges carefully realigned and approximated to restore natural earlobe contour
  • Multi-layer closure performed — deep sutures for structural support, fine skin sutures for surface closure
  • Dressing applied and post-operative instructions provided

PROCEDURE FACTS

Duration Approximately 20–30 minutes
Anesthesia Local anesthesia — no sedation required
Implant / Device Not applicable — soft tissue repair only
Approach Direct excision and re-approximation of split edges
Intraoperative Complications None
Hospital Stay Day procedure — patient discharged same day

POST-OPERATIVE RESULTS

The repair delivered a clean, natural result. The earlobe regained its proper shape and smooth contour, with the scar sitting discreetly along the lower edge of the lobe. There was no visible distortion and no asymmetry between the repaired side and the right ear.

Aruna was very happy with how her ear looked. She described the scar as “hardly noticeable” and said she felt genuinely confident about wearing earrings again for the first time in a long while — which had been her goal from the very first visit.
