THE PROBLEM

She had done everything right.

Riya had been exercising regularly and watching what she ate for years. The fat around her abdomen and flanks wasn’t going anywhere. It wasn’t a question of effort. Stubborn fat in certain areas simply doesn’t respond to diet and exercise the way people expect it to. The fat cells are there, and without intervention, they stay there.

It was affecting her. She avoided fitted clothing. She felt uncomfortable in clothes she wanted to wear. The frustration of doing the right things and not seeing the result she expected had been building for a while before she came in.

On assessment: localised fat deposits at the lower and mid abdomen and bilateral flanks. Skin quality was good with reasonable elasticity. No significant skin laxity. No major asymmetry. A good candidate for VASER liposuction with a realistic target: a cleaner waistline and better body proportions, not a dramatic transformation.

CONSULTATION & TREATMENT PLAN

Assessment findings

  • Localised fat at the lower abdomen, mid abdomen, and bilateral flanks
  • Skin tone and elasticity assessed as good, suitable for liposuction without skin removal
  • No previous surgery or significant medical history
  • Body type and fat distribution mapped before planning treatment zones
  • Patient goals confirmed: improved waist definition, natural contour, no overdone result

Why VASER

VASER uses targeted ultrasound energy to break down fat cells before they are removed. The fat emulsifies rather than being forcibly extracted, which means less trauma to the surrounding tissue. The result tends to be smoother, and the precision allows the surgeon to work on areas like the flanks where the anatomy is close to the surface.

For Riya, the combination of good skin quality and localised fat with no laxity made her a straightforward candidate. Standard liposuction would likely have worked too, but VASER was the preferred choice here for the level of definition she was after.

PROCEDURE DETAILS

Step by step

  • Baseline photographs taken across four standardised positions before starting
  • Treatment areas marked with the patient standing upright
  •  Tumescent solution infiltrated to the treatment zones to reduce bleeding and improve fat removal
  • VASER probe applied to emulsify fat using ultrasound energy
  • Emulsified fat removed using small cannulae
  • Abdomen and flanks treated sequentially with symmetry checked throughout
  •  Volume removed assessed and recorded for both sides
  • Compression garment applied before leaving theatre
  • Post procedure photographs taken in recovery

POST OPERATIVE CARE AND RECOVERY

Recovery instructions were given in writing and reviewed with Riya before discharge. The following is what she was told.

Compression and support

  • Wear the compression garment continuously for 4 to 6 weeks
  • This reduces swelling, supports tissue contraction, and helps achieve a smooth final contour
  • Remove only for bathing as advised by the team

What to expect in the first few days

  • Mild swelling, bruising, and some fluid drainage are normal in the early days
  • Sleep with the upper body slightly elevated for the first few days to manage swelling
  • The swelling will reduce gradually over the coming weeks

Activity and movement

  • Light walking is encouraged from day 2 to 3 to improve circulation and prevent stiffness
  • Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and core workouts for at least 3 to 4 weeks
  • Resume normal activities gradually based on how recovery progresses and the surgeon guidance

Diet and hydration

  • Stay well hydrated throughout the recovery period
  • Follow a balanced, low sodium diet to support healing and reduce fluid retention
  •  Good nutrition matters more during recovery than most patients expect

Medications and wound care

  • Take all prescribed medications including pain relief and antibiotics as directed
  • Keep incision areas clean and dry and follow the dressing instructions carefully
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol throughout the recovery period as both delay healing

Lymphatic drainage

  • Lymphatic drainage massage may be recommended to support recovery and improve the final contour result
  •  This is typically advised by the surgical team at the follow up appointment

Warning signs to report immediately

Contact the clinic immediately if you notice excessive swelling or sudden asymmetry, severe pain that medication is not relieving, or any signs of infection such as fever, redness, or unusual discharge from the incision sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes VASER different from regular liposuction?

Standard liposuction removes fat mechanically. VASER adds an ultrasound step first that breaks down the fat cells before they are extracted. This means less force is needed, there is less trauma to the surrounding tissue, and the result tends to be smoother. It is particularly useful in areas where precision matters, like the abdomen and flanks.

I exercise regularly. Why won't the fat on my abdomen go?

Certain fat deposits are largely determined by genetics and hormonal factors rather than overall fitness. The cells in those areas are resistant to the metabolic processes that fat in other areas responds to. Exercise and diet improve your overall health and body composition, but they cannot specifically target or eliminate localised deposits. That is why liposuction exists as a procedure.

How long does it take to see the final result?

The shape is visible fairly quickly once the initial swelling settles, usually within 2 to 4 weeks. But swelling continues to resolve for 3 to 6 months, and the skin takes time to retract and adapt to the new contour. The final result is usually clear by around 6 months post surgery.

Will the fat come back after liposuction?

The fat cells removed during liposuction are gone permanently. But the remaining fat cells in other parts of the body can still expand with significant weight gain. Maintaining a reasonably stable weight after the procedure helps preserve the result. Most patients find that once they see the improvement, motivation to stay consistent with diet and exercise increases noticeably.

Does VASER liposuction leave visible scars?

The incisions are very small, typically 3 to 4 millimetres, placed in positions the surgeon chooses for access and concealment. Most patients find the scars fade to the point of being barely noticeable within 6 to 12 months. Proper wound care and sun protection during healing support a better scar outcome.
