What is lipoma?
A lipoma is a slow-growing fatty mass that forms between the skin and the muscle layer beneath it. Lipomas can develop in any part of the body but are most commonly found on the neck, arms, shoulders, abdomen, back, and thighs. They are soft and spongy to touch and move easily when given a little pressure.
Lipomas are not cancerous and tend to be painless. They are usually less than 2 inches, but they can develop to be pretty enormous over time. They may have a fast growth rate, an uneven shape, and painful to touch in rare cases.
Lipomas can be unpleasant if they grow large enough to press on adjacent nerves or include many blood vessels.
A lipoma does not usually require treatment, but if it concerns you, is painful, or starts growing, it may be better to remove it. Please contact Dr. Harikiran Chekuri, one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgeons in Hyderabad, with over 10000 surgeries spanning 14+ years.
What causes a lipoma?
The exact cause of lipomas is unclear. However, studies have shown that certain factors can increase a person’s likelihood of having lipoma. They are as follows:
- Gender: Lipomas are more common in men than in women
- Age: Lipomas are more common in middle-aged adults or those between the ages of 40 and 60
- Family history: People who have a family history of lipomas are more likely to develop them
- Medical issues: Gardner syndrome, Cowden syndrome, Adiposis Dolorosa, and Madelung disease are some of the medical conditions that increase the likelihood of having lipomas
Please visit Dr. Harikiran Chekuri, a highly-skilled plastic surgeon in Hyderabad, for diagnosing any unusual lump on your or your loved one’s body.
What are the tests involved in alipoma diagnosis?
The following tests are required to determine if you have lipoma:
- A physical examination
- The removal of a tissue sample (biopsy) for laboratory testing
- If the lipoma is large, has odd features, or appears to be deeper than the fatty tissue, an X-ray or other tests, such as a CT scan or MRI, are recommended.
There is a slight possibility that a lump that looks like a lipoma is liposarcoma, a type of cancer. Liposarcomas are malignant tumors that develop quickly. They donot move beneath the skin and are frequently painful. If the doctor suspects liposarcoma, they will likely do a biopsy, an MRI, or a CT scan.
How is the lipoma removed?
A lipoma usually does not require treatment. However, if the lipoma causes discomfort or grows significantly, Dr. Harikiran Chekuri advises that you get it removed.
Treatments for lipoma removal in Hyderabad include:
Surgery: Most lipomas are surgically removed by making a small incision on the area and then squeezing it out. If the lipoma is large, a bigger incision will be required to remove it completely. Remission after removal is very rare. There can be a possibility of scarring and bruising.
Minimal excision extraction may cause less scarring. The incision length is 25% – 50% of the lipoma area in the minimal excision extraction procedure.
Lipoma removal is a simple surgical operation that can be performed on the arms, forehead, legs, and other body parts. The surgery is done after you are given local anesthetic injections. It takes between 20 and 45 minutes to remove a lipoma.
Liposuction: Some lipomas can also be removed with liposuction. Dr. Harikiran Chekuri will make a small incision on the lump and insert a thin tube. The fatty mass will then be sucked out of the body through the tube.
How long will I take to recover after the procedure?
The stitched wound will take about 10-14 days to heal. It would be best if you rested as much as possible during this time by avoiding intense exercise or anything stressful.
Most people are able to return to their office jobs the next day. Showers can still be taken because a splash-proof covering is applied. The stitches can be removed in about 7 – 10 days.
What is the cost of lipoma removal?
The cost of lipoma removal may vary depending on which city you are in, the hospital and its facilities, the type of surgery, and the severity of lipoma.
Lipoma removal cost in Hyderabad starts from Rs 4,000 to Rs 8000. But it depends on where you get the treatment from, the procedure and its length, the number of lipomas to be removed, and their stage.

Lipomas are just fatty tumors that grow beneath the skin and are completely harmless. They usually do not cause any pain, and medical intervention is typically not needed unless you want to remove it for cosmetic reasons.
Sometimes they can become painful if they grow on top of a nerve or include many blood vessels. If they are physically troubling you, such as a lipoma on the underside of your thigh that makes it difficult to sit, you should consider having it removed.
